Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Cancer!  Probably one of the scariest, ugliest words out there.  A word you never want to hear coming out of your doctor's mouth.  To some it's a reminder that it is a disease that they have and can beat, to others it is a word that only brings sadness and anger when muttered because a loved one was taken away from them.  According to breastcancer.org an estimated  246,660 U.S. women will be newly diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2016 and 2,600 men will have the same diagnosis (yes this disease can affect men as well).  That is an average of 1 out of 8 women in the U.S. that will develop breast cancer...1 out of 8!!!  That is such a scary statistic.

Unfortunately all of us know or have known someone who is currently battling some sort of cancer or who lost that treacherous fight to this disgusting disease.  In an effort to be a part of something bigger and do our part in donating time and money to help with research and support we decided to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk this past Sunday at Jones Beach.

The day started off cold but really turned out to be a beautiful day to walk along the boardwalk.  So many people showed up wearing pink with survivors' names on their tees and others walked with signs and pictures in memory of those that they have lost.  The feeling was a sense of family, that together we can and will beat this.  People coming together to support and fight a common cause.  People giving high fives along the way to strangers just because even though they may not know each other, that day they felt some sort of camaraderie with that person because they had some idea of how they have felt at some point in their lives dealing with the presence of this disease.

(At the halfway mark of our 5 mile walk...leaving our name in support of those fighting every day)

Being a part of this walk for the first time made me realize that even though we may not be the ones researching for a cure, there is still something that we can do to help.  We can show support, donate, be there emotionally and physically for someone.  We can do something as simple as taking someone to an appointment or helping with the bills.  There is always a way to show support to those that are sick and walking for someone who can't walk for themselves is another way to do so.

Along with walking this Sunday and the money the Kamari Kids Team raised we are also donating 10% of all our sales for the month of October to The American Cancer Society.

Thank you to all that walked with us this past Sunday and thank you to everyone that donated and helped us reach our goal.  Thank you to everyone that has shopped with us this month, feel good about it because you are helping someone in need!

Please go to www.breastcancer.org to learn about early detection and symptoms and please if you can donate to The American Cancer Society.
