Favorite Holiday Movies
Posted on 30 December 2016
'Tis the night before New Years Eve, it's snowing and cold outside and the three of us are cuddled on the couch under a warm comfy blanket. The house smells of hot chocolate and popcorn. The lights are out and the movie is about to start. Christmas may be over, but the holiday movies are still going strong in this house.
Tonight we are going to watch one of my favorite's:
A story about baby who sneaks into Santa's sack and is raised in the North Pole as an elf. Knowing he is different than all the other elves he heads to New York City to find his birth dad, only to find out that he is on the naughty list. Any movie with Will Ferrell is a must in my book and this funny and heartwarming film is high up on my list.
Another Christmas favorite! When Kevin's family goes away on vacation and leaves him behind by accident, he has to shop for food and toiletries, and ward of some pretty mean burglars. He sets up a whole scene with cardboard cut outs to make it look like there is a party going on and he uses an old gangster movie to pretend that he is the one talking to the delivery guy. Who hasn't repeated the line "Keep the change you filthy animal"?
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Jim Carrey as the revenge seeking Grinch who lives up high above Whoville in this adaptation of a Dr. Seuss' children's favorite. He plans to ruin Christmas for everyone until he encounters an adorable little girl, Cindy Lou, who believes that he is just misunderstood and should be given a chance to experience how wonderful the Christmas holiday really is.
It's a Wonderful Life
This Christmas classic is an old one but a good one. A tale of George, a banker who on Christmas Eve is depressed about his finances and feels like a failure. He makes a wish that he had never been born. With the help of an angel named Clarence he is shown what a life without George would be like. A journey that earns Clarence the angel his wings and leaves George realizing that although he may not have a lot of money and be in some trouble right, now all in all, he has had a wonderful life.
This one is my personal favorite and not suitable for the children (had to throw this one in). It follows different relationships throughout the Christmas season. From a young boy who has just lost his mother and is finding that he is in love with a girl for the first time to the Prime Minister of England falling for one of his aides. You'll be smiling and singing with Hugh Grant as he dances to the song "Jump for My Love" by the Pointer Sisters and there won't be a dry eye in the house when Mark (Andrew Lincoln) professes his love to Juliet (Keira Knightley) with note cards telling her "...to me you are perfect"
These are just a few of my family's favorites. Would love to hear what holiday movies you and the family love to watch during the season.
Wishing everyone a Healthy and Happy New Year! Here's to 2017!
