Camp Life

Swimming....
When I look at this photo it represents everything I would want to feel being in camp. This photo was taken of my daughter during swim team practice one day at camp. I have no idea what she was looking at or laughing at but, it's the ultimate reaction that a parent wants to see. I'm so glad someone caught it on camera.
Sailing....
There are so many different activities that kids participate in over the summer. In our neighborhood there are many kids that go away for the summer to sleepaway camps and then others that stay home and do a day camp. There are some really great programs that give kids an opportunity to try different things than they normally would during the school year.
We live near the water and there's a great camp that my kids go to that involves sailing, kayaking, wind surfing, paddle boarding, tennis and swimming. What a life these kids have right??? Except they never really enjoyed the sailing part of it. They loved being out on the water but got very scared when the wind picked up. It always made them feel uneasy and they would complain about it constantly. I never understood until I went on a sailboat myself and was completely afraid every time the boat tilted side to side which is apparently the entire time when you're sailing. Although they will never be die hard sailors they learned some pretty awesome life skills.
Sunscreen....
Let's not forget about the final "S" for sunscreen. I feel like I am constantly reminding my kids to keep reapplying and to make sure they have a hat on. They are in the sun for like 5 minutes and have this ultimate tan that I couldn't get if I sat out all summer.
Socializing....
Ultimately the summer is also a perfect time to unwind, be lazy and take some quality vacation time with family and friends. But sometimes I feel like the summer schedule is so much more hectic than the regular school year. There's always driving here and there, different times for different activities and trying to catch up with friends you just don't get a chance to see too often. I guess the whole open schedule and knowing that you have more free time sometimes can work against you. We are a society that lives on schedules and filling up our days with things to do constantly, especially in the metropolitan area.
So I always like to keep this song in mind when the schedules get too busy. Let's not forget that summer's here and it's time to dance in the streets and be carefree.
Calling out around the world
Are you ready for a brand new beat
Summer's here and the time is right
For dancing in the streets
They're dancing in Chicago
Down in New Orleans, in New York city
All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
They'll be swinging, swaying, records playing
And dancing in the street, oh
It doesn't matter what you wear
Just as long as you are there
So come on, every guy grab a girl,
Everywhere, around the world
They'll be dancing, dancing in the street
It's an invitation across the nation
A chance for folks to meet
They'll be laughing and singing, and music swinging
And dancing in the street
Philadelphia, P.A., Baltimore in D.C. now
Don't forget the Motor City
On the streets of Brazil
Back in the U.S.S.R., don't matter where you are
All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
They'll be swinging, swaying, records playing
And dancing in the street, oh
Dancing in the Street by David Bowie
I have come to the conclusion that even though camp does involve a schedule and is about keeping busy, it's a good and fun busy. That's a different busy than studying for tests and schoolwork busy. Even though we tend to over schedule our lives, summer is a good time to take a step back and reboot.
